The internet has brought many
opportunities to me as a person. Sometimes it is difficult to imagine
what life would be without the internet. Even my nephew who is less than 10
years old utilizes the internet. Basically, what I do on the internet is search
for information, download eBooks and teaching resources. I try as much as
possible to use the internet to improve myself.
Utilising the internet I am able to get information about what is
happening in the world from the comfort of my home. I am able to
determine the veracity of things I stumble across in books (especially
non-fiction). However, most times I am posed with a setback of restricted
access to some materials.
You can imagine my frustration when I stumble across a site and
that has all the information am seeking only to be informed that my geographic
location does not have access to this. This is a common occurrence
especially when the resource in question is about Europe and North America.
I registered for a Dinosaur Paleobiology, 12
week online short course by University of Alberta on Coursera that ran from
January 3, 2015 – May 8, 2015. I was
very excited about this course because I studied Geology here in a Nigeria
University and have always been curious about Dinosaurs. The course was interesting and informative but
further readings that were suggested by the course instructors were not
available to my country. Most frustrating was the fact that I could not get
access to a virtual museum that had collections of Dinosaurs’ fossils.
As a freelance writer, with clients from
all part of the world; I have do so some web research to understand the history,
culture and people of a particular community.
I can only imagine what a great relieve an online access to collections
of Europe and North America's museums, libraries, and archives would mean to
me.
Should such a collection exist in one
place, it will undoubtedly be my first stop when I need to learn about Europe
and North America. It will also be
helpful when I need to compare or verify a data.
The value of such a collection would be
priceless as it would give me a rare opportunity of visiting Museums in other
parts of the world without have to leave my country. It will also make my life a lot easier.
