Digital libraries are
very important for developing countries.
They become tools in education, health, agriculture, sanitation,
nutrition and many other areas. A
collection of digitized documents, images and sounds are currently available in
Nigeria. Higher institutions have
e-library which does not differ from a digital library. These digital libraries are similar to the
traditional libraries that we are quite familiar with but have their
differences.
The invention of
technology does not change people, especially Nigerians. It does not matter if
it is a traditional library or a digital library; I visit libraries for
three reasons
1. To study
2. for reference
3. Entertainment
Hence, irrespective
of the way the information is presented, as long as it can perform these three
things on my list, then it would be perfect for me.
The shortcomings in
the library I use here in Nigeria not in the organization or storage of this
materials but the availability of the materials that I need. When I go to the library for study, I find
adequate materials to help me, but when I go for entertainment or a personal
research the library comes short. This is applicable to both the traditional
libraries and digital libraries in my community.
I recall going to the
library for some check on the background of Dan Browns’ controversial novel The
Da Vinci Code. I was disappointed as
there was none of the artworks mentioned where available even in the digitized libraries. Searching the internet did not do much good either as there was contradicting
information online; it was difficult determining that which was accurate.
A digital library
that has variety of information, not restricted to Nigeria would be ideal. This library should contain information not
just about Africa, but include North America and Europe. It would be perfect if this library can be
online and accessed anywhere. That way,
from the comfort of my home I can check up whatever material I am interested
in.
I love to read books
because I learn so many things from these books. The history of countries I have never
visited. The rich culture and the
beautiful terrains the authors describe to in their books always fascinate
me. An online library that will help me
to learn more and confirm if what the author wrote is what it really is would
be perfect.
